“Even after all this time the Sun never says to the Earth ‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with a love like that…it lights the whole sky.”

--Hafiz, quoted in Daily Calm app, Dec 11, 2023

Amazing how for the entire 4.2 billion years of the Earth’s existence, the Sun has been there for us, providing us light and solar energy, which makes it possible for life to exist on Earth. Plants need sunlight to grow. Animals, including humans, need plants for food and the oxygen they produce. Without heat from the Sun, Earth would freeze. The Sun does all this and asks nothing in return. What a beautiful role model for giving!

I am an avid listener to the app Daily Calm, which teaches concepts in mindfulness, stress reduction, and living life meaningfully, with full awareness. I do my best to never miss my daily session. Today’s message was particularly timely given the holiday season we are entering, and it has relevance, more importantly, to how we live our lives all the time. I also found a connection between what motivates us to give, or what should motivate us, and to something I write about in my book about our motivations for willing to be vulnerable.
